Let me share how I stabilized myself in New York City as an example. Midtown was central to most of my daily activities. I often visited the NYPL Performing Arts Branch for research, and after that, I’d take a dance class at Alvin Ailey. Just down the street from Ailey, there was a storage space and a gym. I kept my electronics in the storage unit to avoid carrying too many things through the city.
Stabilizing myself in this area helped me become more familiar with the neighborhood and its people. It also allowed me to navigate a space where my intended career was thriving. Auditions and most theater shows are held in Midtown, making it an ideal location for me.
Recently, I became a member of Soho House, a social club that has made my world feel much smaller in the best way. It’s a contained environment full of people with similar pursuits, which has greatly enhanced my sense of community. Applying to social clubs and spaces beforehand can be beneficial. It helps you stabilize faster and build meaningful relationships.
